After the storm: why Corpus Christi's hurricane history drives pest surges

Corpus Christi sits on the Gulf of Mexico at just 6.6 feet of elevation, and its hurricane history is consequential. The 1919 storm killed hundreds and left only three structures standing on North Beach, prompting the city seawall. Hurricane Celia (1970) made landfall as a Category 4 with 140 mph sustained winds, damaging roughly 85% of Corpus Christi's structures. Hurricane Harvey (2017) made landfall nearby as a Category 4, and its storm surge eroded down to shale bedrock at roughly 40 feet of depth in Packery Channel.
